“My heel hurts with the first step in the morning”
This is a common complaint among my patients who suffer from heel pain. There can be several causes of heel pain. One of the most common causes is a condition called plantar fasciits.
The condition occurs when the plantar fascia is strained beyond its normal extension, causing the soft tissue fibers of the fascia to tear or stretch at points along its length; resulting in inflammation, pain ,and possibly the growth of bone spur where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone. It is common among athletes who run and jump a lot.
Other risk factors include improper shoe gear, flat feet, high arch, arthritis, injury. If you have tried self- treatments and have failed to relieve the pain, then I would recommend that you see a podiatric physician.
The podiatrist will perform a examine of the area and may perform diagnostic x-rays to rule out problems of the bone. The good news for you is that conservative or non-invasive treatments can be done first. This may include oral or injectable anti-inflammatory medication, exercise, shoe recommendations, shoe inserts or orthotic devices.
